چکیده

A model to calculate the microscopic parameters of self-induced transparency (SIT) modelocked quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) is presented and the parameters are then calculated for a particular structure. These parameters are then used to calculate the gain to absorption ratio that is required to determine the required ratio of gain periods to absorbing periods that must be grown in order to obtain stable modelocked pulses. The modelocked pulse parameters, along with the stability limits are then calculated as the ratio of gain to absorption varies. For the SIT modelocked QCL design that we examined, we found that three to five gain periods must be grown for each absorbing period in order to ensure stable operation. & 2013 Elsevier B.V. Effects of backward-propagating waves and lumped mirror losses on self-induced transparency modelocking in quantum cascade lasers

Work to date on self-induced transparency modelocking in quantum cascade lasers QCLs has neglected backward-propagating waves and lumped mirror losses. In this work, we remove these unrealistic assumptions. The qualitative features of the modelocking are unaffected by this improvement in the model, but the parameter regime in which stable modelocked pulses may be found is reduced. This reductio...

Self-induced transparency modelocking of quantum cascade lasers in the presence of saturable nonlinearity and group velocity dispersion.

We consider the impact of saturable nonlinearity and group velocity dispersion on self-induced transparency (SIT) modelocking of quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). We find that self-induced transparency modelocking in QCLs can be obtained in the presence of saturable nonlinearity if the saturable loss or gain is below a critical limit. The limit for the saturable loss is significantly more stringen...

Temperature Effect on THz Quantum Cascade Lasers

A simple semi-phenomenological model, which accurately predicts the dependence of thresholdcurrent for temperature of Resonant-phonon three well quantum cascade laser based on verticaltransitions is offered. We found that, the longitude optical phonon scattering of thermally excitedelectrons is the most important limiting factor for thermal performance of high frequency THz QCLs.In low frequenc...

Self-induced transparency modelocking of quantum cascade lasers.

The possibility of using the self-induced transparency effect to passively modelock lasers has been discussed since the late 1960s, but has never been observed. It is proposed that quantum cascade lasers are the ideal tool to create this modelocking, due to their rapid recovery times and relatively long coherence times and because it is possible to interleave gain and absorbing layers. Converse...

Analytical and computational study of self-induced transparency mode locking in quantum cascade lasers

The possibility of using the self-induced transparency effect to achieve laser mode locking has been discussed since the late 1960s but has never been observed. In prior work, we proposed that quantum cascade lasers are the ideal tool to realize self-induced transparency mode locking due to their rapid gain recovery times and relatively long coherence times, and because it is possible to interl...
